Water and the Word: Planted

Numbers 24:6

Like palm groves that stretch far away,

like gardens beside a river,

like aloes that the Lord has planted,

like cedar trees beside the waters.

As a mobile species,

we have difficulty imagining

that we are planted,

but our roots, too, run deep;

not as if we can’t move

about the planet, because,

of course, we can.

Our journeys take us

to neighbors near and far,

yet we remain rooted

to the fertile ground

near the river of life,

and it’s tributaries of love.

When we’re out there,

sharing what we’ve been given

and who we are,

I pray we’ll always remember

the gift of our rootedness,

that we’ll always be river keepers.
