Water and the Word: Flow

Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said,

‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ (John 7:38)

Ever notice

that the water

coming ‘round the bend,

across the rocks,

and over the dam

never seems to worry

about not arriving earlier

or being able

to hang around longer?

It just flows in the present,

adding the gentle power

of its liquid abrasion

to every obstacle

in its path,

and rolling toward the ocean

with all of the focus

and intentionality

of the moment.

What would

our lives be like

if we could mirror

such rapt attention

toward the world

around us,

being exactly who we are

in each breath and conversation?
