Water and the Word: At the Scent of Water

“For there is hope for a tree,

if it is cut down, that it will sprout again,

and that its shoots will not cease.

Though its root grows old in the earth,

and its stump dies in the ground,

yet at the scent of water it will bud

and put forth branches like a young plant.”

JOB 14:7-9 (NRSV)

What happens

at the scent

of water determines

how woke we are.

For there is life

to be dreamed

in the places where

the aroma of safe,

clean water

fills the nostrils and hearts

of people who’re willing

to fully give of themselves.

Let me know

if you’ve forgotten

what that smells like.

I know people

who can reintroduce you

to this scent

and the life

toward which it pulls.
