| What if an installation team comes up with a better design idea for the standard board? |
The Living Waters for the World Technology Team and Design Sub-team welcome technical input and advice on a better designed water system. It is important that these teams review the design thoroughly and possibily test it before it is implemented in the field.
Here’s an answer that was provided to a team in 2006 that changed the Ozone contact design from the Standard Board churn to a contact tank. This was done without consultation with LWW. While your design achieves the goal of making good water, the Design Team feels that your approach is significantly different from the Standard Living Waters board. Because the design is significantly different, we cannot endorse your approach and approve your team to make any additional installations using this design under the Living Waters for the World mission. Please note that this is not a rejection of your design, but an appeal for you to recognize the importance of conformity in the system application over a very diverse operating population. The Living Waters Standard Board design has gone through several changes since its first system and will likely go through other changes in the future. With 159 installations in 18 countries, we will have to be more diligent in managing these changes in the future to ensure that those in need continue to receive clean water. The current Living Waters Standard Board design includes the PZ2-4 Ozonator for disinfection and the 30 ft Ozone churn to ensure adequate ozone quantity and contact time with the water. Our Clean Water Systems Handbook specifies a third "Use Phase" step in batch processing to ensure that all finished water is recirculated through the disinfection step before bottling. This "Use Phase" provides an additional safety factor to ensure all processed water has been disinfected. After this step, we typically measure residual ozone at levels up to 0.5 ppm. One of the goals of the Living Waters mission is to provide sustainable systems that our in-country Operating Partners can operate, maintain, and troubleshoot without supervision by their Initiating Partner. The Living Waters for the World Clean Water Systems Handbook, Clean Water U training materials, and curriculum ensure that our Initiating Partners understand the design concepts of the Standard Living Waters Board, so that they can transfer them to their Operating Partners. These concepts are transferred by our Initiating Partners to their Operating Partners during the installation and training. Armed with these materials, we are confident that our Operating Partners can operate, maintain, and troubleshoot their systems independent of their Initiating Partner. With a different design and not having reviewed your training and maintenance documentation for these changes, Living Waters is less confident in the sustainability of your design.
